Sequence of genera and species generally follows Bertelli et al. (2002) [Bertelli, 2002 #292] and Bertelli & Porzecanski (2004) [Bertelli, 2004 #10777]. Although the family is separated into two major clades, roughly corresponding to the traditional subfamily designations (Tinaminae and Nothurinae/Rhynchotinae), the position of Rhynchotus is unclear; see both these papers and Silveira & Hofling (2007) [Silveira, 2007 #10842]. Subfamily circumscription awaits additional data.
N. bonapartei and N. nigrocapillus form a superspecies; see Parker et al. (1985) [Parker, 1985 #2907].
Includes pernambucensis; see Raposo do Amaral & Silveira (2004) [Raposo do Amaral, 2004 #10035].
Citations to 1861 refer to description of an egg that is not comparative and thus non-diagnostic.
For treatment as a separate species from C. cinereus see Blake (1977) [Blake, 1977 #326].
Forms a superspecies with C. berlepschi; see Sibley & Monroe (1990) [Sibley, 1990 #3636].
May deserve treatment as a separate species; see Blake (1977) [Blake, 1977 #326] and Cabot (1992) [Cabot, 1992 #642].
For recognition see Blake (1979) [Blake, 1979 #327].
Species limits in the C. erythropus complex (thought to include C. duidae, C. noctivagus, C. atrocapillus, and possibly also C. boucardi, C. kerriae and others) are poorly understood; within this species, the subspecies columbianius, saltuarius, and idoneus have been treated as separate species by one or more authors.
May merit treatment as a separate species (Blake 1977) [Blake, 1977 #326].
Treated as a separate species by Meyer de Schauensee (1970) [Meyer de Schauensee, 1970 #2678].
May merit treatment as a separate species (Sibley & Monroe 1990) [Sibley, 1990 #3636].
Correct original spelling. Spelling delattrei in Dickinson (2003) [Dickinson, 2003 #9533] an ISS.
Forms a superspecies with C. kerriae; see Sibley & Monroe (1990) [Sibley, 1990 #3636].
Sibley & Monroe (1990) [Sibley, 1990 #3636] suggested this and C. bartletti formed a superspecies.
Treated as a subspecies of C. brevirostris by Hellmayr & Conover (1942) [Hellmayr, 1942 #1946], but they seem to overlap in western Amazonia (Meyer de Schauensee 1966) [Meyer de Schauensee, 1966 #2676].
Bertelli et al. (2002) [Bertelli, 2002 #292] and Bertelli & Porzecanski (2004) [Bertelli, 2004 #10777] found this to be a sister taxon to C. brevirostris + C. bartletti.
For treatment as a separate species from R. rufescens see Maijer (1996) [Maijer, 1996 #12112]; thus treated here as allospecies.
Includes kalinowskii (previously treated as a separate species by virtually all authors); see Krabbe & Schulenberg (2005) [Krabbe, 2005 #2280].
Includes jimenezi Cabot, 1997 [Cabot, 1997 #643], and labradori Cabot, 1997 [Cabot, 1997 #643]; see Appendix 2.2.
Introduced to Easter I.
For treatment as a separate species from N. maculosa see Fjeldså & Krabbe (1990) [Fjeldså, 1990 #1570].
Forms a superspecies with N. darwinii and N. chacoensis; see Sibley & Monroe (1990) [Sibley, 1990 #3636].
For treatment as a separate species from N. maculosa see Blake (1979) [Blake, 1979 #327] and Cabot (1992) [Cabot, 1992 #642], but see also Short (1975) [Short, 1975 #13726] and Hayes (1995) [Hayes, 1995 #13725].
Forms a superspecies with E. formosa; see Sibley & Monroe (1990) [Sibley, 1990 #3636].
For recognition see Blake (1979) [Blake, 1979 #327] and Cabot (1992) [Cabot, 1992 #642].
Forms a superspecies with T. ingoufi; see Sibley & Monroe (1990) [Sibley, 1990 #3636].
