This name introduced by Wetmore (1926) [Wetmore, 1926 #15472]. It's precedence over alternative names, including the name Scytalopodidae, is discussed by Bock (1994) [Bock, 1994 #398] based on what is now Art. 40.2.1 of the Code (I.C.Z.N., 1999) [I.C.Z.N., 1999 #2059]. In saying that Rhinomya was placed in synonymy with Rhinocrypta, a junior name, he could have clarified that Rhinomya Geoffroy St. Hilaire, 1832, was preoccupied by Rhinomya Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 [Diptera].
For a new circumscription of the family see Ericson et al. (2010) [Ericson, 2010 #12295]; this carved out the family Melanopareidae.
The recognition of two subfamilies has been proposed by Ohlson et al. (2013) [Ohlson, 2013 #14349]. Sequence of genera derived from Moyle et al. (2009) [Moyle, 2009 #11813], Ericson et al. (2010) [Ericson, 2010 #12295] and Ohlson et al. (2013) [Ohlson, 2013 #14349]. For very different proposals based on anatomical evidence see Mauricio et al. (2012) [Mauricio, 2012 #14059].
Treated as conspecific with P. tarnii by Fjeldså & Krabbe (1990) [Fjeldså, 1990 #1570] and Sibley & Monroe (1990) [Sibley, 1990 #3636], but see Howell & Webb (1995) [Howell, 1995 #2019] and Chesser (1999) [Chesser, 1999 #14914] for evidence for separate recognition.
Forms a superspecies with P. castaneus; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401].
Doubtfully distinct; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401].
This genus appears in Peters vol. 10 on p. 456; this addendum is easily overlooked. Inclusion in this family confirmed by Ericson et al. (2010) [Ericson, 2010 #12295], who found this and Liosceles to be sister genera.
Doubtfully distinct; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401].
The name Scytalopodinae dates from 1846; however the younger name Rhinocryptinae Wetmore, 1926 [Wetmore, 1926 #15472], takes precedence from 1837 due to an earlier generic synonymisation; see Bock (1994) [Bock, 1994 #398], who mistakenly cited Wetmore, 1930.
Species formerly included in Scytalopus, but see Maurício et al. (2008) [Maurício, 2008 #11242] and Mata et al. (2009) [Mata, 2009 #11877].
Treatment as a subspecies of E. indigoticus suggested; see Vuilleumier et al. (1992) [Vuilleumier, 1992 #4066] and Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401]. But see Mata et al. (2009) [Mata, 2009 #11877] for genetic evidence supporting species rank.
Considered by Sibley & Monroe (1993) [Sibley, 1993 #9208] to form a superspecies with E. psychopompus.
Ericson et al. (2010) [Ericson, 2010 #12295] found that this and Eleoscytalopus are sister genera.
Forms a superspecies with M. stresemanni; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401].
For continued recognition as a separate genus from Scytalopus; see Fjeldså & Krabbe (1990) [Fjeldså, 1990 #1570], Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401] and Ericson et al. (2010) [Ericson, 2010 #12295].
Species limits follow Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275] as modified in Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401].
For treatment as a separate species from S. unicolor; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401] and Coopmans et al. (2001) [Coopmans, 2001 #1055].
May deserve species rank; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275] and Ridgely & Greenfield (2001) [Ridgely, 2001 #3274].
Placement in sequence based on view expressed by those describing this species.
For treatment as a separate species from S. unicolor; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
Includes S. petrophilus Whitney et al. (2010) [Whitney, 2010 #12466]; see Raposo et al. (2012) [Raposo, 2012 #14041], who, based on the original evidence, validated the type locality whence just the one tapaculo species is known. However, for the view they reject see Maurício et al. (2010) [Maurício, 2010 #12431].
This has become a matter for a decision by I.C.Z.N. as implied by Nemésio et al. (2013) [Nemésio, 2013 #15318]; until that decision the usage of the name speluncae is dictated by its accurate type locality and precedence.
For sister relationship to S. pachecoi, see Mata et al. (2009) [Mata, 2009 #11877].
Formerly included within S. speluncae auct. (herein treated as S. notorius), but the two differ in voice and are locally sympatric; see Maurício (2005) [Maurício, 2005 #9970].
Perhaps NE Argentina, but specimens require re-examination.
For arguments that this is a synonym of S. speluncae, with which it was long identified, see Maurício (2005, 2010) [Mauricio, 2005 #9970] [Mauricio, 2010 #12431]; but see also Raposo et al. (2012) [Raposo, 2012 #14041].
For treatment as a separate species from S. femoralis; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
For treatment as a separate species from S. femoralis; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
For treatment as a separate species from S. femoralis, while including nigricans and confusus as subspecies; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
For treatment as a separate species from S. femoralis; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
For treatment here as a subspecies, see Wetmore (1972) [Wetmore, 1972 #4153].
For treatment as a separate species from S. panamensis; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
Birds from the C Andes of Colombia have been referred here but their identity with this population is uncertain.
For treatment as a separate species from S. latebricola; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
Donegan & Avendaño (2008) acted as First Revisers in selecting the name meridanus and assigning it precedence over the simultaneously published name fuscicauda.
For treatment as a subspecies of S. meridanus and a summary of complex previous taxonomic history; see Donegan & Avendaño (2008) [Donegan, 2008 #10988].
For treatment of S. caracae as a separate species from S. latebricola; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
Forms a superspecies with S. parkeri; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401].
For treatment of S. spillmanni as a separate species from S. latebricola; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
For treatment of S. altirostris, S. affinis, S. acutirostris, S. urubambae, S. simonsi, S. zimmeri, S. superciliaris, S. fuscus and S. canus as separate species from S. magellanicus; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (1997) [Krabbe, 1997 #2275].
Includes infasciatus Chapman, 1915 [Chapman, 1915 #693]; see Donegan & Avendaño-C. (2008) [Donegan, 2008 #10988].
Considered to form a superspecies with S. zimmeri; see Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401].
Date 1883 correctly used in 2003; use of 1863 in 2014 was an error.
Placed in S. canus by Krabbe & Schulenberg (2003) [Krabbe, 2003 #4401]; but see Krabbe & Cadena (2010) [Krabbe, 2010 #12045].
Date 1939 used in Dickinson (2003) [Dickinson, 2003 #9533] miscopied.
