1 This name introduced by Wetmore (1926) [Wetmore, 1926 #15472]. It's precedence over alternative names, including the name Scytalopodidae, is discussed by Bock (1994) [Bock, 1994 #398] based on what is now Art. 40.2.1 of the Code (I.C.Z.N., 1999) [I.C.Z.N., 1999 #2059]. In saying that Rhinomya was placed in synonymy with Rhinocrypta, a junior name, he could have clarified that Rhinomya Geoffroy St. Hilaire, 1832, was preoccupied by Rhinomya Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 [Diptera].
2 For a new circumscription of the family see Ericson et al. (2010) [Ericson, 2010 #12295]; this carved out the family Melanopareidae.
3 The recognition of two subfamilies has been proposed by Ohlson et al. (2013) [Ohlson, 2013 #14349]. Sequence of genera derived from Moyle et al. (2009) [Moyle, 2009 #11813], Ericson et al.
