The Colluricinclidae previously made up of the genera Collurincla and Pitohui is largely subsumed here; but the pitohuis were non-monophyletic and the type species plus P. dichrous are transferred to the Oriolidae and P. cristatus moves to the Falcunculidae where it becomes Ornorectes cristatus. The two 'pitohuis' belong to the monotypic genera Melanorectes and Pseudorectes.
The genus Hylocitrea has been transferred to the Bombycillidae following Spellman et al. (2008) [Spellman, 2008 #11761]; Pachycare to the Acanthizidae following Norman et al. (2009) [Norman, 2009 #11985]; and following Schodde & Christidis (2014) [Schodde, 2014 #15669] Aleadryas to the Oreoicidae and Rhagologus to its own family.
Sequence of genera derived from Jønsson et al. (2010) [Jønsson, 2010 #12015], in conjunction with Jønsson et al. (2008) [Jønsson, 2008 #10613], Dumbacher et al. (2008) [Dumbacher, 2008 #11709] and Zuccon & Ericson (2012) (Zuccon, 2012) [Zuccon, 2012 #13486].
The two pitohuis belong to the monotypic genera Melanore and Pseudorectes.
Formerly included in Pitohui (now in the Oriolidae), but established as sister to Pachycephala and Coracornis by Jønsson et al. (2008, 2010) [Jønsson, 2008 #10613], [Jønsson, 2010 #12015], Dumbacher et al. (2008) [Dumbacher, 2008 #11709] and Zuccon & Ericson (2012) [Zuccon, 2012 #13486]. Melanorectes, Coracornis and Pachycephala form a genus group.
For treatment as a separate species from Colluricincla megarhyncha see Rozendaal & Lambert (1999) [Rozendaal, 1999 #3413], and placed in Coracornis following Jønsson et al. (2010) [Jønsson, 2010 #12015].
Pending the availability of molecular data, now in press, we retain the treatment of broad P. pectoralis split into the groups discerned by Galbraith (1956) [Galbraith, 1956 #1644] as used by Dickinson (2003) [Dickinson, 2003 #9533] as a response to too broad a taxon. But see Boles (2007) [Boles, 2007 #12231] for retention of a broad P. pectoralis with 59 subspecies.
For subspecies, see Schodde & Mason (1999) [Schodde, 1999 #3524] and Higgins & Peter (2002) [Higgins, 2002 #13592].
Includes gilbertii see Schodde & Mason (1999) [Schodde, 1999 #3524]. The spelling gilberti is an ISS.
Identity of population in Foya Mts unclear, see Mayr & Gilliard (1954) [Mayr, 1954 #7002] and Diamond (1972) [Diamond, 1972 #1318].
Population in Fakfak Mts. may represent another, undescribed form, see Diamond (1985) [Diamond, 1985 #1321].
This is group G. from Galbraith (1956) [Galbraith, 1956 #1644]; all forms previously part of a broad species P. pectoralis except caledonica, which was treated as a monotypic species by Mayr, 1967 [Mayr, 1967 #2561]. See also Boles (2007) [Boles, 2007 #12231].
This name appears in Vol. 2 of series 6 of this journal contra Mayr (1967) [Mayr, 1967 #2561] and does date from 1875.
For correct date see Sherborn (1934) [Sherborn, 1934 #3608] and Dickinson et al. (2011) [Dickinson, 2011 #13287].
For correct date see Sherborn (1934) [Sherborn, 1934 #3608] and Dickinson et al. (2011) [Dickinson, 2011 #13287].
For treatment as a monotypic species see Mayr (1967) [Mayr, 1967 #2561].
Tentative report from the Foya Mts. by Diamond (1985) not since confirmed, see Beehler et al. (2012) [Beehler, 2012 #14412].
Treated in the genus Pitohui by Mayr (1967) [Mayr, 1967 #2561], then mistakenly placed in the genus Colluricincla in Dickinson (2003) [Dickinson, 2003 #9533].
