1 Classification largely follows Carboneras (1992) [Carboneras, 1992 #14025] except as noted below. Mathews's family name conserved; see Opinion 1696 (I.C.Z.N., 1992) [I.C.Z.N., 1992 #6632].
2 Species sequence derived in part from Penhallurick & Wink (2004) [Penhallurick, 2004 #3001], who also showed that Hydrobates is embedded within Oceanodroma, as did Robertson et al. (2011) [Robertson, 2011 #13265], rendering this genus paraphyletic. Hydrobates as the prior name must be used for the combination.
3 Includes melitensis Schembri, 1843 [Schembri, 1843 #13953]; see Hartert (1920) [Hartert, 1920 #4653], but see also Lalanne et al. (2001) [Lalanne, 2001 #13586] and Cagnon et al. (2004) [Cagnon, 2004 #11209].

Subspecies named for various breeding populations traditionally considered undiagnosable (Austin 1952) [Austin, 1952 #13970], but see Bolton et al. (2008) [Bolton, 2008 #10916].
5 Bolton et al. [Bolton, 2008 #10916] mentioned Procellaria lugubris Bonaparte, 1845, the type of which is now without an identity but which is not this. The name Thalassidroma jabejabe Bocage, 1875, does not seem to have been excluded as the identity of this new taxon.
